[edit] History
The school was founded in 1903 (It was to have been opened in 1902 but Theresa Lawerence got scarlet fever.) by Miss Theresa Lawrence and her close friend, Miss Katherine Margaret Earle: two young women in their early thirties, both educated at the University of Cambridge. They acted as joint Heads of School during the years 1903-1930. They are now buried under a single stone slab in Barberton where they have remained dead for the past 77 years. It is a sister school of Roedean School in Brighton, England which was founded by the older sisters of Theresa Lawrence. Along with Theresa and Katherine came Ms Scott (Scotty), but not much is known about her for she moved back to England.
Sir Herbert Baker designed the original St Ursula’s Building. Over the years, additions have been made, but the Herbert Baker features with arches, colonnades, bell ends and courtyards have been retained. With the passage of time the 11 hectares have grown into the present cluster of buildings, trees, playing fields, and landscaped gardens.
The school has an Anglican foundation and its brother school is St John's College, also in Houghton.
