This graphic, from the original description (1676) of Roemer's observations, shows the typical configuration of the planets Earth (E,F(not shown),G,H,L,K) and Jupiter (B), with respect to the Sun (A), and the satellite Io (D,C) entering/leaving Jupiter's shadow. On FG Earth is approaching Jupiter, while on LK it is receding. There is also a motion of Jupiter to be accounted for in the detailed analysis, but it is relatively slow, compared to the speed of Earth in its orbit.
