Template talk:Rockbox firmware

[edit] Necessary?
I'm sorry, but after noticing this template on the gigabeat article, I decided to revert your edit let it stay until I get your reply. For an article that should generally specify information of the gigabeat series, as defined by the article, I think just a note about the players' alternative software/firmware would be enough. Remember, Wikipedia is not an advertising service, whether it is open or closed source. I understand your good intentions, but methinks it's not fitting in articles concentrating more on the players' native specifications. --Jw21/PenaltyKillah(discuss•edits) 16:19, 11 October 2007 (UTC)
- Thanks for preferring intelligent dialog to the edit wars. Taking into account WP:SOAP, I've edited the template to be more neutral and brief. If you think, some part of it still has an advertising tone, write here and I will try to fix. Regarding your note about player specifications, IMHO the information in the template may be very interested to the user or potential user of such a player, because it contains list of features, which the player may have, installing this 3rd party firmware. Consider the situation, when the player is sold exclusively with manufacturer firmware A, but the manufacturer's website contains also the firmware B with different set of features (for example MTP vs UMS). Do you think, the information about firmware B should not be added to the article just because the player does not contain it when sold? Is this new set of features considered "native"? Does we have a situation, where availability of information (about some firmware and features) depends on whether the manufacturer has officially approved such a firmware? ilia 20:58, 11 October 2007 (UTC)
- Right, that seems all fine and well. If you ask me me, I would just summarize Rockbox in about five sentences and add a main article link to the proper Rockbox article. The way it is now, it's like adding a whole section called Pepto Bismol into Stomach. And another related article, Creative ZEN, doesn't devote sections for Amarok or Banshee just because it is compatitble (much less syndicated sections...) I'll see how it goes anyway. Keep up the work! --Jw21/PenaltyKillah(discuss•edits) 22:51, 11 October 2007 (UTC)
