Rock català
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The term Rock Català (Catalan for: Catalan Rock) is used to describe those bands singing in Catalan of any music style, especially in the late 80's and early 90's.
These groups followed a dark period within the history of Catalonia and Spain, the Franquist era, in which the Catalan language and all signs of its identity were pursued and punished. The last years of the Franco regime were shattered by a generation of singers that claimed and called for freedom for what they called the oppressed people in Spain. La Nova Cançó is the musical and political movement of the Catalan singers who were pursued in the period, like Lluís Llach, Raimon or Ovidi Montllor.
The unique relation between these bands is the use of the Catalan language as a way of expression and as their mother-tongue in Catalonia, Land of Valencia, Balearic Islands and Northern Catalonia.
Some representative bands of this movement include:
- Els Pets
- Sau
- Obrint Pas
- Sopa de Cabra
- Sangtraït
- Whyskin's Cullons
- Lax'n'Busto
- The Companys
- Umpah-pah
