[edit] Inaugural festival

The first festival was held on Saturday 24 June 2006. It was held on the shores of Loch Ness. The festival had two stages (main stage and big top) which were active throughout the day. It started at midday and there were different dance acts every hour and a half, until 9:00 pm when DJ Fatboy Slim played a 2 hour set, backed by a big screen with animation. In 2007, French house performers Daft Punk headlined the Clash Arena to over 10,000 fans.

[edit] 2006

The original Rock Ness "festival" was a 2 hour gig played by Fat Boy Slim. In the set, he played a remixed version of The Automatic's "Monster", accompanied by a slide show of photos of The Loch Ness Monster

[edit] 2007

This year, the festival was increased to two days, with many stages. Headlining on Saturday was Chemical Brothers, while Sunday was headlined by Manic Street Preachers on the main stage, and Daft Punk in the Clash Arena; the first date on their Alive 2007 tour.Daft Punk were apparently much more popular, as the 10,000 person tent was soon filled, and the sides were pulled off by organisers, as a reported 30,000 people ended up watching their set. The set was held up by nearly an hour due to a light show problem, and Daft Punk responded to this, by playing an uncharacteristic 10 minute encore. The set played is the same as found on the Alive 2007 CD, which was recorded at Bercy, Paris. A full line-up for Rock Ness 2007 can be found here.

[edit] Controversy

There was some controversy at Rock Ness 2007 with the death of one festival goer from taking an overdose of heroin in the car park outside the Main Arena and Camp Site.

A professional footballer Richie Hart who plays for Inverness Caledonian Thistle was detained in connection with possession of cocaine on the banks of Loch Ness at the festival. He admitted a charge of possessing the cocaine and was fined £300.[citation needed]

Also, as it was Daft Punks first Scottish show in over 10 years, the decision for them to headline the 10,000 capacity Clash Arena came under scrutiny by festival fans as they were a "must see" for a lot of 35,000 capacity.

In the 2008 festival, a teenager died in front of the main stage. This is believed to have been due to the influence of drugs but a coronors verdict has yet to have been given. This second drug death could prove dangerous to the festivals survival.

  • On Sunday the 10th of June 2007 Daft Punk were the headline act in the 10,000 capacity 'Clash' tent. The show was delayed for around 45 minutes due to a problem with the light show but the restless crowd gave them a jubilant welcome when they appeared. Due to demand the promoters removed one side from the tent to allow the thousands of people outside to see the spectacular light show. 'Daft Punk spent several minutes acknowledging the crowd at the end of their performance before leaving the stage, only to return several minutes later to perform a rare 10 minute encore which included Stardust's 1998 anthem' 'Music Sounds Better Without You' and Thomas Bangalter and DJ Falcon's song Together.[citation needed]
