List of The Munsters episodes |
"Rock-A-Bye Munster" is an episode of The Munsters from the show's first season. It guest-stars Paul Lynde as Dr. E. H. Dudley, and its title is a play on the lullaby "Rock-a-bye Baby."
[edit] Plot
When the TV in Grandpa's dungeon malfunctions and tunes in to the Munster kitchen, Herman overhears Lily telling Marilyn about a "new playmate" for Eddie whom she won't let Herman know about. Herman and Grandpa think she's saying that she's pregnant.
In reality, the family's doctor, Dr. Dudley (Paul Lynde), is going away for a while and having Marilyn look after his son Elmer. When Herman finds out that Dr. Dudley is somehow involved, he and Grandpa are certain that Lily is pregnant. Herman starts catering to Lily's every need and fixing her strange dishes like pickles and strawberries, all the while dropping hints about her pregnancy.
Meanwhile Herman's birthday is approaching and Lily decides to buy him a new car. When she goes to the dealership, the salesman (Sid Melton) tries to interest her in a dragster. However, Lily notices a hearse and falls for it instead, although she does express a fascination with the dragster. In the end she purchases both cars, but asks for some modifications.
Finally Lily decides to tell Herman about Eddie, but even then he believes she's talking about a new child. When she explains that the boy is named Elmer and is due the next day, Herman is flustered and somewhat upset, chalking the speedy pregnancy up to modern technology. The next day he can hardly contain his excitement, and is horrified to find Lily busy making breakfast when she tells him that Elmer has already arrived. He goes out to meet what he believes to be his new son, and finds a remote-controlled Frankenstein's monster toy. Mistaking this as his progeny, he quickly gets Grandpa to come and they cuddly with the toy until Eddie comes with Elmer to find the toy and tells his father that Elmer is the new kid. Elmer, who is an ordinary human child, is enamored with Herman, but Herman is so repulsed by what he believes to be his new son that he faints.
When he comes to, Lily explains to Herman that Elmer is Dr. Dudley's son who has come to stay for a while. She then reminds him that it's his birthday (October 20[1]) and takes him outside to see her present. Herman is delighted to find the Munster Koach, an enormous cross between the dragster and the hearse.
