Description

A sign erected by the Carroll County Historical Society describes the history of the town of Rockfield, Indiana. Photo looks west from the corner of Walnut Street and Lake Street. The sign reads:

Rockfield

The town of Rockfield was platted in 1856 — the same year the railroad was completed thru town. Previously this land was in woods, except for 8 to 10 acres. Land on the south was platted by Jeroloman & Gunn — the north by John Farneman, first postmaster.

A sawmill was the first building in town. Other businesses were stores, cabinet-makers, wagon-makers, blacksmith shops, etc. The first residence was on the east corner lot, north of the railroad. In 1907, the Interurban went thru town just south of the railroad & lasted until 1932. The elevation along the railroad is 702 feet, the highest point between Detroit & St. Louis.
