I think there is a mistake here. If he were a "Knight of the Order of the British Empire" he would be KBE not OBE. I don't think he was a member of the Order of the British Empire at all. The title "Sir" can come from being a Knight Bachelor. There may be confusion with another Robin Day, designer of the polyprop chair, who is an OBE.
