"Selected Chabet Drawings 60's - 70's" May 23 - 30, 2004
The Philippines has ever been awash with many branded icons, yet Roberto Chabet has ever been the reluctant icon. Since the 1960’s, Roberto Chabet has been one of the noted founders of the avant-garde or experimental movement in our country. As the primal force of conceptual art, the artist has ever refused to be put within frames, forcing viewers to see beyond the concept of each piece and into the impulse of its creator and impetus of his creation. Galleria Duemila exposes to the public Chabet drawings from this early period in an exhibition entitled “Selected Chabet Drawings 60’s-70’s” at its gallery at the 4th floor of the SM Megamall from May 23-30, 2004.
The artist has held many roles in his career, notably that of the first curator of the museum of the Cultural Center of the Philippines and long time professor at the University of the Philippines College of Fine Arts. Yet, he has always made each job description a dynamic and fluid role uncontainable in a mold. As a mentor to his students and curator to the public’s heritage, he always challenged artists and viewers to not only know more about art and themselves, but to quarry deeper within for their art lest they risk mediocrity.
Drawings shown are selected pencil on paper works, pieces whose form holds challenging cognitive depth and whose execution has actively changed whatever concept a viewer tries to pin on them. Chabet described his pieces as “creatures of memory” and himself as their “custodian.”
