Robert W. Cone is a major general in the United States Army, and is currently in command of the Combined Security Transition Command-Afghanistan. Prior to assuming this position on July 16, 2007, he was the Commanding General, National Training Center and Fort Irwin, CA.

General Cone hails from Manchester, New Hampshire and was commissioned as a second lieutenant in the Armor Branch from the United States Military Academy in 1979. Later, at the University of Texas at Austin, he earned a Master of Arts degree in Sociology. General Cone was assigned to the Behavioral Science and Leadership department at West Point where he served as both an instructor and Assistant Professor. His military education includes the Naval War College, Army Command and General Staff College, Infantry Officer Advanced Course and Armor Officer Basic Course.

Throughout his career, General Cone has served in operational assignments in the United States, Germany, and Southwest Asia. His commands include: 1st Squadron, 3rd Armored Cavalry Regiment, III Corps, Fort Bliss, TX, later Fort Carson, CO, and 2d Brigade, 4th Infantry Division (Mechanized), Fort Hood, TX. His key staff assignments include: Executive Officer, 11th Armored Cavalry Regiment, Fulda, Germany; Operations Officer, 4th Infantry Division, Fort Hood, TX; Director, Joint Advanced Warfighting Program, Institute for Defense Analyses, Alexandria, VA; and, Director, Joint Center for Operational Analysis, U.S. Joint Forces Command, Operation Iraqi Freedom.

His awards include the Defense Superior Service Medal with oak leaf cluster, Legion of Merit with two oak leaf clusters, Meritorious Service Medal with two oak leaf clusters, Army Commendation Medal with two oak leaf clusters and the Army Achievement Medal.
