Robert Jacob Sugden was a fictional character in the British soap opera Emmerdale. He was played by three different actors: Richard Smith (from 1986 to 1989), Christopher Smith (1989-2001) and Karl Davies (2001-2005).

[edit] About Robert

Robert was notorious for the number of romantic relationships in which he engaged and for his long standing feud with his adopted brother Andy Sugden, mainly because Andy was responsible for a fire that killed his stepmother, Sarah, who he considered to be his real mother. (Robert's biological mother Pat had died in a car crash when he was only four months old). This feud led to several violent incidents and was escalated when Robert had an affair with Katie, Andy's wife, in 2004. This resulted in Andy attempting to shoot Robert and Katie, wounding their own Father Jack in the process.

Robert and Katie remained together until Katie found out about Robert's affair with Sadie King and left Emmerdale. Robert then began a relationship with Debbie Dingle, the mother of his niece, Sarah, planning to take Sarah away from the village and hurt Andy again.

Robert left Emmerdale in October 2005, following an accident in which Max King was killed when Andy's Land Rover overturned and burst into flames.
