Robert Sassone

Robert Sassone is an American college basketball player and coach.

Born in Brooklyn,(NYC)came to St. Bonaventure University on a basketball scholarship in the fall of 1949. Led the team to the 1951 National Invitation Tournament as a sophomore. Credited as the first player in college basketball history to take a charge from the opposing player, thus getting the ball for his team. Graduated in 1953 and was drafted in the third round of the NBA draft by the Philadelphia Warriors. Passed on the NBA to become an educator and raise a family.

Coached Olean High School to consecutive basketball championships in 1967-1968. Resigned in 1968 to rejoin St. Bonaventure as an assistant coach. Sassone was an integral part of their Final Four team in 1970.
