[edit] History
[edit] Back Story
Robert was raised in Tasmania by his mother, Gail (Fiona Corke), along with his triplet siblings, Cameron (also played by Hunter) and Elle (Pippa Black). Growing up, Robert was constantly compared to his do-good brother, Cameron, and was treated as second-best. His brother and sister kept a diary about him called "The Freak Files". Nicknames given to Robert by them include "RobRob", "Rob Squared", "The Blob", "Ferret Boy" and "The Cat Skinner".
[edit] On Screen
In October 2005, Paul Robinson (Stefan Dennis, Robert's father) decided to celebrate the re-opening and 20th Anniversary of the Lassiter's Hotel Complex in Erinsborough with a 1940s-style joy flight to Tasmania, followed by a night at the Lassiter's casino and hotel on the island. Unknown to all on board, a bomb had been placed in the undercarriage of the Douglas DC-3 aircraft, in close proximity to the plane's engines. The device was timed to explode as the plane was mid-flight over Bass Strait. Viewers however were aware of the bomb's presence, having witnessed Robert (partly offscreen) planting the device next to a photo of Izzy and Paul in a previous episode. A while into the flight the device exploded, terrifying those on board. Though the plane remained relatively intact after the explosion, controlling the aircraft was difficult and the fuel soon ran out from its wrecked underside. When the engines eventually gave up the plane descended violently into the ocean below, sinking not far from the shore of Tasmania.
Susan and Izzy surfaced together, unable to see any of the others, though Elle could be heard screaming nearby. Izzy located Elle, but lost track of Susan in the process. Connor and Serena were trapped in the wreckage of the plane, and were forced to remove their life jackets to reach the surface of the water. Both lost consciousness from exhaustion. Connor later found himself washed up on a deserted stretch of coastline, but Serena was nowhere to be seen.
Paul, Izzy, Elle, Alex and Sky were found by rescue helicopters in the 24 hours following the crash. Susan remained missing for three days, eventually being found washed up on shore in a dazed, semi-conscious state. David's body was recovered the following Thursday, but Liljana and Serena remain missing, presumed drowned. Connor and Dylan washed up safely on shore, but did not reveal themselves to rescuers, taking the opportunity to be assumed dead and escape arrest.
Dylan soon learned that Stingray was facing arrest without him. He returned home, interrupting his own funeral in the process, so that they could be arrested together. The pair were eventually found innocent.
Several weeks later Harold, working with the Salvation Army, discovered Connor living on the streets and persuaded him to come home. Connor never told the police of his crime. Several months later Robert arrived on the show, secretly plotting the demise of his family by pretending to be Cameron, whom he put in a coma. He planned to turn Elle, Paul, and Izzy (Natalie Bassingthwaighte) against each other in an attempt to hurt Paul for what he "did" to Gail. It was also revealed that he was the Lassiters Joy Flight plane bomber, and ultimately responsible for the deaths of David, Liljana, and Serena Bishop. He also murdered the man originally accused of the plane bombing, Affirmacon employee Tony Corbett. Throughout the following weeks after he arrived pretending to be his comatose brother Cameron, Robert caused a food poisoning outbreak at Lucinda's, attempted to kill Izzy and baby Charlie by turning the gas on as she slept and also murdered a man from Katya Kinski's past, a man that was going to fund Steph Hoydland's Baby Belt with Paul's help, businessman Sean Dempster. On May 30, 2006, it was implied that Robert murdered Connor O'Neill (Patrick Harvey), who had gotten "too close to the truth".
He began work as an orderly at Erinsborough & District Hospital with plans to become a nurse. In conjunction with this he started dating nurse Katya Kinski (Dichen Lachman).
Cameron eventually woke from his coma, and Robert switched back identities, pretending to be in a coma at the hospice. Because of this, the real Cameron was assumed to be Robert when everybody found out that "Cameron" was really Robert, following his failed attempt on Elle's life. Cameron was arrested, but hoped Elle would be able to prove to the police that he was not Robert. His mother Gail visited from Tasmania to provide moral support to the Robinsons and also to verify whether or not Cameron is telling the truth. Robert later "awoke" from his coma to continue his evil plans.
In the lead up to Episode 5000, Robert lured Paul into isolation under the guise of a father-and-son camping trip. During Episode 5000, Robert trapped Paul in a mine shaft and showed Paul reminders of the bitterness he had suffered before leaving his father in the caved-in mine. He used his car to pull down the entrance to the cave, and caused the cave to collapse, with Paul trapped inside. When he came out, Gail, Elle and Izzy confronted him. Izzy said that no one could ever love a freak like him, which provoked an outburst from Robert, who subsequently ran off. Paul was eventually rescued.
Robert's next plan was to kidnap his ex-girlfriend Katya, with whom he remained obsessed despite having ended their relationship prior to returning to his real identity. Robert found out about Paul and Gail holding a marriage ceremony, so he showed up at their ceremony and shot Paul. Yet again Paul escaped largely unscathed, as he had worn a bulletproof vest in anticipation of such an occurrence. Robert was arrested after his failed assassination attempt, and was clearly dismayed as his father, alive and conscious, smirked at finally outsmarting his psychopath son. Katya was also rescued by Susan Kinski and Toadie Rebecchi.
Robert sent a note to Katya Kinski saying that he would be with her very soon. Scared for her safety, Katya told Max who told Paul. Paul rang the prison to find out how Robert got a message to Katya from within a high security prison. The prison was in confusion. Paul found out that the prison had discovered an escapee: Robert.
While Katya was walking to a Tibetan seminar, she saw Cameron who offered her a lift. She accepted the lift and arrived safely at her destination. It is then that she received a call from Max who was nearby. He told her that Robert had escaped and she mentioned that she was in a car with Cameron. Worried, Max told Katya to get out of the car and go straight inside the place where she's meant to be.
Katya was scared that she was in the car with Robert and ran from the car, leaving her bag. Cameron ran after her to give her bag to her, but was deliberately hit by Max's car. Cameron's injuries were life-threatening, and he needed emergency surgery. He died during surgery. It was later revealed that Robert never escaped from prison, and that the message was meant to scare people unnecessarily.
Robert made a brief appearance in 2007, he was brought in to testify for the case of Max Hoyland. The point of bringing in Robert was to prove that he was a threat to Katya Kinski. After being provoked, Robert burst into anger and proved Max's innonence. Robert was then dragged off by the guards.
Later it was revealed that Robert did not murder Connor O'Neil, due to the fact that Connor sent his friends St Patrick's Day presents from China, in his handwriting which Toadfish Rebecchi recognised. How Connor got to China without being harmed by Robert while at his mercy has yet to be established. Also, to this day, the deaths of Serena and Liljana Bishop have yet to be confirmed as their bodies were never recovered. Fans have speculated that either Lil or Serena will eventually return after recovering from their ordeal in 2005, much like what happened with Harold when he was believed drowned at sea but discovered later on by Marlene Kratz in a Salvo shop.
