Robert Nero was born in Wisconsin and later moved to Winnipeg, Canada. He is married to Ruth Nero and has five children. Dr. Robert Nero is an ornithologist, archaeologist, poet and scientist.

In 1984, Robert Nero rescued a Great Gray owlet from near death and raised it in captivity. Named Lady Gray'l (a contraction for Gray Owl), the two visited schools across Winnipeg, advocating wildlife research and preservation. On July 16, 1987, the Great Gray Owl was adopted as the provincial bird of Manitoba.
