Robert L. Bradshaw International Airport (IATA: SKB, ICAO: TKPK) is located just northeast of Basseterre on the island of Saint Kitts, serving the nation of Saint Kitts and Nevis. It was named after the first Premier of St. Kitts-Nevis-Anguilla (as it then was), Robert Llewellyn Bradshaw. A major renovation was completed in December 2006. The US$17 million project financed by loans from the St. Kitts-Nevis-Anguilla National Bank and Taiwan, includes expansion of the parking apron to accommodate six-wide-bodied aircraft at the same time, complete resurfacing of the 8,000-foot runway and construction of a new taxi-way. Construction started late 2004. Up to 6 wide bodied jets can now be accommodated on the tarmac.
The booking (sabre) code is SKB. The airport can accommodate commercial jumbo jets and handles scheduled non-stop flights – provided by various airlines – from the United Kingdom, Canada and United States, as well as numerous regional commuter flights from within the Caribbean area. RLB International Airport also provides facilities for cargo jets, private jets and various other types of aircraft.
The airport boasts all of the modern conveniences of any world-class international airport of its size, and is widely acclaimed to be the best mid-size airport in the entire Caribbean. RLB International is equipped with state of the art baggage screening and passenger security technology, as well as efficient baggage handling mechanisms.
Additionally, flight information display monitors are conveniently located throughout the facility, and cable news television screens and other entertaining pastime activities are available at the gates. A restaurant and bar is situated in the departures area where patrons can sit and enjoy the view of airport flight activities. A number of retail and duty-free shops offer a varied selection of merchandise and souvenirs.
Taxis meet every flight at the Robert L. Bradshaw International Airport on St. Kitts and Newcastle Airport on Nevis. The taxis are not metered, but fixed rates, in EC dollars, are posted at the airport and at the jetty. Note that rates are the same for 1-4 passengers. On St. Kitts the fare from the airport to the closest hotel in Basseterre is EC$18; to the farthest point, EC$72. Before setting off in a cab, be sure to clarify whether the rate quoted is in EC or U.S. dollars. There's a 50% surcharge for trips made between 10 PM and 6 AM. You can call the St. Kitts Taxi Association (PHONE: 869/465-8487; 869/465-4253; 869/465-7818 after hrs).
As Government continues its thrust to strengthen the Tourism sector, The Robert L Bradshaw International Airport will focus on continuous improvement in the services it offers to the traveling public.
