Robert G. Cole Junior-Senior High School
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Robert G. Cole Junior-Senior High School is located on Fort Sam Houston Army base in San Antonio, Texas. Their athletic teams are known as the Cougars.
Cole, a part of Fort Sam Houston Independent School District, is known for its excellent academics and basketball program. Cole is a 2A high school and one of two schools in the Fort Sam Houston ISD.
As the boundaries of the Fort Sam Houston ISD coincide with the boundaries of the installation, enrollment at Cole is open only to those pupils residing on the installation. Cole is one of only three U.S. high schools, all in Texas, whose enrollment is effectively limited to military dependents. Other high schools do exist on U.S. military installations, but draw pupils from the surrounding area, one example being Meade High School on Fort George G. Meade, Maryland.
Currently Cole is under reconstruction. A new gym, library, middle school, stadium, and field house are being built. Cole is expecting about 500 additional high school students in the next 10 years due to the relocation of several Army units. The new gym, media center (library), and middle school have all been completed. There are also plans for renovating the high school.
Cole's enrollment is usually near 300 students in 9th to 12th grades. Enrollment averages around 500, placing it in Class 2A of the Texas University Interscholastic League.
The Cougars have a proud sports tradition. Led by NBA star Shaquille O'Neal, they won the 1989 Class 3A state basketball title. Basketball coach Herb Moore recently notched his 400th career win.
It is named after Medal of Honor recipient Lt. Col. Robert G. Cole, who was born on Fort Sam Houston.
Cole has been twice named a National Blue Ribbon School, in 1986-87 and again in 1990-91. [1]
