Robert Elliot (born April 30, 1986) is an Irish football goalkeeper for Charlton Athletic. His previous clubs include Erith Town, Bishop's Stortford and Notts County and Accrington Stanley.
[edit] Career so far
Plucked from the obscurity of Non-League outfit Erith Town as a 17-year-old, Rob Elliot has enjoyed a meteoric rise through the club's ranks. In the 2004/05 season he was already getting first-team playing experience at the likes of Bishop's Stortford and Notts County and made his Football League debut for the latter. Originally at League Two County to gain experience as back-up to Magpies first-choice Saul Deeney, a red card and subsequent three-game ban for the County keeper led to Elliot's chance in March 2005. And after his initial introduction from the bench, Elliot started three games for the Meadow Lane side, performing well enough to be included in one Coca-Cola League Two Team of the Week. The 2005/06 campaign was Elliot's real coming of age, however. The imposing Greenwich-born stopper had a tough act to follow when he embarked on his own loan spell at Accrington Stanley in November following the exploits of fellow Addicks custodian Darren Randolph, but he was more than up to the task. Indeed, it could be argued that Elliot even managed to eclipse Randolph's achievements in his five months at the Interlink Express Stadium (now renamed the Fraser Eagle Stadium) as he was selected as the young player of the year for the eventual runaway Conference champions. The talented glovesman clinched a two-year contract taking him through to 2008 last summer but he returned to help Stanley in their new Football League venture at the start of the 2006/07 campaign after agreeing a year-long loan deal. Sidelined by an ankle injury, Elliot made his first appearance of the season in unusual circumstances. The custodian was on the bench for Stanley's high-profile Carling Cup visit to Premiership club Watford. But with extra-time nearing an end and penalties looming, Accrington manager John Coleman demonstrated the faith he had Elliot's shot-stopping abilities by introducing him to the action specifically for the shootout. Unfortunately the tale didn't have a happy ending as the Hornets progressed through to the third round by winning the tie 6-5 on penalties following the 0-0 draw. And that seemed to set the scene for Elliot's second loan spell with the Lancashire club, with the Addick finding himself playing second fiddle to Ian Dunbavin. He made 11 appearances before being recalled by Charlton in January. But with Scott Carson unable to play in the final game of the season against his employers Liverpool, Rob took his place on the first-team bench for the first time at Anfield to end to campaign on a personal high. Elliot made his Charlton debut on the 5th of April 2008 in a 2-1 victory over Plymouth Argyle after a red card was shown to goalkeeper Nicky Weaver in the 3rd minute of the game he came on as a substitute for Lee Cook.
