Robert Knutson Life - Biography

Robert Knutson was one of the most important artists in the Pop art movement in America. Knutson became as famous as many of the corporations and celebrities he portrayed in his popular screen prints. Among his many popular quotes and comments he stated famously that "The honor of the man is in his art."

Knutson was born in 1913 to Norwegian parents. Born and raised in Minneapolis, Minnesota Knutson was hired straight out of High School and worked for Albinson ’s in Minneapolis Minnesota. http://www.procolor.com/aboutus/news/index.php

Within six years Knutson bought the firm. K&K Advertising Art operated from 1941 to 1973. At its height, K&K employed over 50 artists, and was located on the 23rd floor of the Foshey Tower in Minneapolis. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Foshay_Tower

Knutson went on to open the Studio Arts Department at the University of Minnesota during the 1960’s and 1970’s at the University of Minnesota with Jim Smith. This information was confirmed by Wayne Potratz, Professor, and Karl Bethke Professor, retired. Both are from the University of Minnesota Art Department

Knutson achieved success as a commercial artist during the 1940s, 1950s, 1960s and the 1970’s achieving commendations from the Art Director's Club and the American Institute of Graphic Arts. He began to become quite well known for his very good portraits. Knutson had work published in popular magazines such as Vogue, Harper's Bazaar and The New Yorker.

He also created billboards of the Marlboro Man to include the national landmark at Hollywood and Vine, and the Pacific Coast Highway, both of which were in California and both won Guinness World records for largest portrait of a man. During this time Knutson also began exhibiting his work in fine art galleries and managed to exhibit in a group exhibition at the Museum of Modern Art.

After retirement in 1984, Robert Knutson started to produce State Duck Stamps. He is the only artist on record to win over 10 State Duck Stamp competitions. Samples of his work can be found at the following links.
