Robert Atkinson (born April 29, 1987 in Beverley, East Riding of Yorkshire) is an English footballer who currently plays on loan for Grimsby Town as a defender. His full time club is Barnsley.

Atkinson has come through the youth ranks with Barnsley, making his debut on 6 March 2004.

In the 2005/06 he had a six month loan spell with Scarborough playing 22 league games.

He was then loaned out in 2006/07 to Halifax Town. After some impressive performances, Atkinson was recalled to Barnsley following injuries to Bobby Hassell, Paul Reid and Antony Kay.

Atkinson played his first full game for Barnsley on 26 December 2006, in a 1-0 win over Burnley, picking up the man of the match award.

He signed for Grimsby Town on loan in November 2007 and he has been a first team regular since then, he scored his first goal for Grimsby Town against Chester City on the 1st January 2008. He also played the full 90 minutes at Wembley, in the Johnstone's Paint Trophy final defeat to Franchise F.C.
