Dr. Robert A. Bryan served as interim president of the University of Florida from 1989 to 1990. Dr. Bryan is a native of Lebanon, Pennsylvania. He earned his bachelor's degree at the University of Miami and his master's and a Ph.D. in English from the University of Kentucky.
Dr. Bryan, a specialist in 16th and 17th century English literature, began teaching at UF in 1957. In 1968 he left UF temporarily to serve at Florida Atlantic University. Dr. Bryan returned to UF a year later, and was named Vice President for Academic Affairs in 1975. Dr. Bryan was named Provost in 1985.
During his term as President, Dr. Bryan and Athletic Director Bill Arnsparger were responsible for hiring Steve Spurrier as head football coach of the Florida Gators football team.
