Rob Stone

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Rob Stone is an American soccer and football commentator. Stone currently works with Sean McDonough and Chris Spielman on ESPN College Football. He also works on ESPN's Major League Soccer coverage, and MLS Primetime Thursday, as well as their coverage of the 2006 FIFA World Cup. Stone is a 1991 graduate of Colgate University. Prior to working for ESPN, he worked at WTOG in Tampa, Florida.

Stone replaced Dave Ryan as the lead play-by-play announcer for PBA bowling telecasts on ESPN prior to the 2007-08 Denny's PBA Tour. While he has needed some time to learn the intracacies of pro bowling, he has already added two catch phrases to the game: "drop and give me ten" (following a strike), and "hambone" (four strikes in a row).

[edit] Controversy

Stone has come under fire from many bowlers and fans, particularly on the PBA.com message boards, over his conception and use of the term "hambone." While some suggest that Stone is trying to reach out to non-bowlers by making the show interesting, many of Stone's critics have had serious issues with him taking the liberty of inventing new jargon for a sport with which he has worked such a short time.
