He is a member of the Progressive Conservative Party. On election day, March 3rd, 2008, Renner triumphed over his Liberal opponent, Karen Charlton, and began his 5th term serving as Medicine Hat's MLA with 51% of the vote. Renner has previously served in the cabinet of Premiers Klein and Stelmach as the Minister of Municipal Affairs and Minister of the Environment.
