Robert William "Rob" Jones (born November 3, 1979 in Stockton-on-Tees, County Durham) is an English football player, currently captain of Hibernian in the Scottish Premier League. He started his career playing non-league football in his native north-east while working as a PE teacher.

[edit] Grimsby Town

Grimsby Town signed Jones on a free transfer from Stockport in July 2004 after impressing on trial[1]. In his first season, Jones struggled to cement his place in the first team.

However, in his second season with Grimsby, Jones played a central role in the team. After a 1-0 victory over Tottenham Hotspur in the English League Cup during September 2005, Jones was carried off the pitch by Grimsby fans. Grimsby reached the play-off final, only to lose 1-0 to Cheltenham Town. Grimsby agreed a deal to sell Jones to SPL club Hibernian during the summer of 2006. In this deal, Grimsby negotiated a clause meaning that they would receive a portion of the transfer fee Hibs receive for Jones if they sell him.

[edit] Hibernian

Jones signed for Hibernian on a four year contract in June[2]. At 6'8", Jones is the tallest defender in the Scottish Premier League. Due to his height, Jones is effective in the air both defensively and at attacking set pieces, from which he scored eight goals during the 2006-07 season. He has not scored during the 2007-08 season, however, as opposing teams have usually marked him with two players.

Jones was very well received by Hibs supporters, who created his own individual song to the tune of "Gold" by Spandau Ballet. Jones was made captain of Hibernian on 2 January 2007, replacing Kevin Thomson.[3] Jones went on to captain Hibs to their first piece of silverware in 16 years by beating Kilmarnock 5-1 in the 2007 Scottish League Cup Final on March 18, 2007. Jones himself opened the scoring in the Final with a header from a corner kick.

In the summer of 2007, Jones was claimed to be angry at Hibs, after the club turned down an offer from Leeds United.[4]
