[edit] Roanoke Missionaries to China
With today's boom in China, it is unusual that Roanoke, had close contact with China via missionaries for decades... especially the two Carlyle sisters who grew up in (now gone) old Carlyle mansion next to Handley High School and spent their entire lives as missionaries in China ... (circa 1900--1960)
And also, for the Southern Baptist Convention was J Max MacMurrey who spent 24 years as a Missionary in China (1936-1960).
