Roadside Heretics is the 5th studio album by the South African gothic rock band The Awakening, released in 2002.
[edit] Recording
In June 2002 The Awakening recorded its most aggressive album so far, Roadside Heretics. Garrick van der Tuin replaced Glenn Welman as a drummer during Nyte's Dirt Sense tour in May 2001, and influenced the new harsher sound. Thematically, Roadside Heretics deals with discriminated and isolated people. Musically, the sound is guitar-driven, and utilized thick industrial guitars. According to the band, Roadside Heretics marked a new era for The Awakening, as they tried to capture their live energy to the sound. HM wrote that "Ashton Nyte has a great understanding of the gothic aesthetic. Besides modern day mainstream breakthru’s like Reznor and Manson, The Awakening would surely make [David] Bowie, [Peter] Murphy, and Reed proud... he can still make us squirm with a sensuous love song like 'Cover.' Brilliant."[1][2] MyRevelations.de wrote that "Particular attention should be the quieter pieces such as 'My World' dedicated, because this is the strengths of Ashton Nyte, both vocals and composition. Some of the titles like me pretty good, but some are pretty bad, especially 'Angels'; absolutely not succeeded! A Anspieltipp there are times at the end: 'Complexion' is really cool, reminds very strongly of [Marilyn] Manson, but it is still (or maybe that is why) one of the top songs. Overall, the CD is somewhere in the 'very good, not outstanding' division to the region."[3]
