Description

RNZAF Short Sunderland Flying boat awaiting restoration at the Sir Keith Park memorial airfield, Museum of Transport and Technology, Auckland, New Zealand, photographed 2007

The Sunderland shows the remanants of markings at retirement on 25 February 1967 as NZ4115 KN-Q of No. 5 Squadron RNZAF.

The aircraft was originally SZ584 of the Royal Air Force, before serving breifly with BOAC from 2 May 1946 to 16 April 1948.

Returned to the RAF, as one of 16 Sunderlands refurbished to MR5 standard to replace the PBY Catalinas of the Royal New Zealand Air Force, (the RNZAF had previously operated Sunderland Mk IIIs but primarily as transports). NZ4115 served initially as KN-A, later KN-B, KN-Q, and, as seen, simply Q. The aircraft served in Fiji and from Hobsonville air base.

The civillian ZK-ZGQ was apparently allocated, but not painted on the aircraft. The aircraft left active RNZAF service on 9 December 1966 in airworthy state, being gifted to the Museum of Transport and Technology which, like Hobsonville base, is located on Auckland Harbour. The Sunderland made its final journey from Hobsonville to Meola Creek on 22 December 1966.
