Purchased from agent for estate of photographer including right to release for free use. Pencil note on the reverse of the photograph states “This is probably the last photo ever taken of this aircraft in Auckland as it was lost in Evans Bay when taking off on the return flight. Taken from the launch “Teal” cloudy overhead but sun shining agfa camera HP3 film yellow green filter exp meter”

NZ 4051 KN-H was a Consolidated Catalina PB2B-1 Bu73097. Delivered to RNZAF at Fiji on 04 October 1944. It was flooded and sank on 7 February 1950 during take off from Evans Bay, Wellington. The aircraft was struck off charge on 24 June 1950. The salvaged wreck was taken to Shelley Bay and sold for scrap.
