Riyaz Usman, born 23 April 1983, in Alathur, a village in Palakkad District, Kerala, India.


Education

Done schooling in Holy Family Convent LP School, Alathur, Brahmananda Swami Sivayogi Gurukulam High School, Alathur and Ansar English School, Perumpilavu, Thrissur. College life begins at Farooq College, Kozhikode (aka Calicut). Joined there for B.Sc. Mathematics. After getting admission to B.Sc. Information Technology in University of Calicut, joined at Dr. John Matthai Centre, Regional Campus of University of Calicut.

Career Currently working in Infosys, Hyderabad. He is the Webmaster for ES Academy, an education support division for Infosys.


Hobbies

Reading is an obsession. Cooking is another hobby. Loves to watch good movies. Likes to fool around with GNU/Linux and FLOSS


Awards

Won everal prizes for Technical Quizzes and Paper Presentations, along with George Abraham. Won some prizes at University level for Malayalam Story Writing. Lead the school team for Debate, and won prizes for that too.


Papers and Books

Editor for the book, Free Software, Free Society published by Altermedia, India, Indian edition of the international book titled same by Richard M. Stallman. The book was released at the World Social Forum, 2004 held at Mumbai.

Also published two theory papers.

1. Steganography - Camouflage and Concealment Revealed - A study on theory and practice of image steganography (along with George Abraham, XIME, Bangalore)

2. Perpetual Calenders - not so perpetual ? - A study on the fallacy of perpetual calendars (along with Niyas N T, IMD, Pune)


Usually known as desertwind in several internet forums and discussion groups.

Member of several FSUG and activist groups.
