Talk:Riverglass
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
I added some more content that corrects the distinction between RiverGlass the company and the software products it makes. I also clarified the confusion regarding what the programs do. They are not keystroke loggers or email interception programs as the article had stated, relating them to Carnivore (FBI) and ECHELON and Magic Lantern (software). That's not what the RiverGlass programs do. I have done my best to correct this, and to provide non-marketing descriptions that will be of potential value to the Wikipedia community. In the interests of full disclosure, I am affiliated with the company, and only posted here to correct the inaccuracies. I would not have posted here about the company otherwise, because I don't believe that wikipedia articles about companies are particularly appropriate, and tend to be written with a blatant marketing tone, which doesn't help anybody. I tried to avoid that here. Brian Buck 01:51, 20 February 2007 (UTC)

The original author has objected to my correction of the original article, re the term illegal drug trade rather than the term drug prohibition, which was the term used by the original author.
The terms drug prohibition and illegal drug trade are not the same thing. The former refers to the act or process of legislation against drug use (as defined in the Wikipedia article by the same name), while the latter refers to enforcement of such laws (as defined in the corresponding Wikepedia article). The law enforcement agencies that use the RiverGlass software are engaged in enforcement, not in legislation. It would not appear to be an accurate portrayal of the facts to confuse these two.
What might be more appropriate is to cross-reference the actual articles drug prohibition and illegal drug trade themselves rather than to inaccurately portray what this software is or how it is being used.
I will gladly open an RFC if that seems to be the best way to resolve this, but perhaps it would be preferable to have the discussion here on the "talk"/"discussion" page.
Perhaps I am misreading the two referenced articles in question, and I welcome any opinions that can help clarify matters. Brianbuck 00:25, 21 February 2007 (UTC)

Actually, it just occurred to me that perhaps neither of those terms is as good as other ones that may have articles in the Wikipedia. I'm going to go look and see if there are potentially better choices. Brianbuck 00:43, 21 February 2007 (UTC)

No luck finding a different topic/article. Both of the existing ones could use some improvement, I think. Brianbuck 03:48, 21 February 2007 (UTC)
[edit] Drug Prohibition Enforcement
Ok, Here's how I see it: There are often two ways to say the same thing, depending on your political beliefs. "Illegal alien" & "Undocumented guest worker" are both valid terms, with your political leanings probably deciding which one you prefer to use.
From the predator side of the 'War on Drugs', 'illegal drug trade' would naturally be the more natural term. Since I'm writing from the prey side of this issue, the government's habit of taking away our money by force and then using it to take away our medicines, property, freedom & dignity by force should not be justified or sanitized away as merely 'illegal drug trade enforcement'. An RFC discussion would probably be pointless- I'd lose. The Libertarian principles of freedom and personal responsibility were the order of the day for the first 140 years of this nation's history, and they will emerge again to dominate this nation's future... but for now: I'm a walking anachronism, and I know it.
