Riverview is an unincorporated census-designated place in Hillsborough County, Florida, near Brandon. The population was 12,035 at the 2000 census.

Riverview (originally called Peru) was founded in 1856 on the Alafia River's south shore. It was known as Peru (prounounced Pe-Roo) because peru was an Indian name for straight part of the river. The Peruvian Mining Company, which mined phosphate from the Alafia took its name from the settlement of Peru. The term Alafia is translated as "River of Fire" due to the phosphorus on the early riverbottom glowing at night. The area's first school was built in 1893, inside the Peru Baptist Church. The area called Riverview began to be populated on the north side of the river. The two communities were connected by a river ferry. Soon after a bridge was constructed from sections of a bridge that once spanned the Hillsborough River downtown Tampa. The Post Office periodically was moved from the Riverview side to the Peru side of the river and back, causing much distress. The Riverview name eventually came into usage in the early 1940's by the post office to relieve just such confusion with the mail. Peru has disappeared from all but the earliest maps, much to pioneer families' dismay. Some of Peru's or Riverview's settlers include the Barnes, Bourgees, Boyettes, Buzbees, Hackneys, Mansfields, Moodys, Scotts, Thompsons, Whitts, and the Yeomans. The area founded by the Boyette family is now Boyette, Florida.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the community has a total area of 24.4 km² (9.4 mi²). 23.7 km² (9.1 mi²) of it is land and 0.8 km² (0.3 mi²) of it (3.08%) is water.
Riverview is a suburb south of Tampa east of Gibsonton, Florida and north of Ruskin, Florida. Riverview is expected to be the recipient of part of the 200,000 new residents expected on the eastern side of the Tampa Bay by 2010.

As of the census of 2005, there were 12,035 people, 4,434 households, and 3,400 families residing in the community. The population density was 508.4/km² (1,316.1/mi²). There were 4,800 housing units at an average density of 202.8/km² (524.9/mi²). The racial makeup of the community was 63.81% White, 32.33% African American, 0.44% Native American, 1.33% Asian, 0.07% Pacific Islander, 1.98% from other races, and 2.05% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 9.02% of the population.
There were 4,434 households out of which 38.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 61.1% were married couples living together, 12.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 23.3% were non-families. 17.5% of all households were made up of individuals and 5.6% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.68 and the average family size was 3.02.
In the community the population was spread out with 28.0% under the age of 18, 6.1% from 18 to 24, 33.8% from 25 to 44, 23.5% from 45 to 64, and 8.6% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 36 years. For every 100 females there were 97.8 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 93.4 males.
The median income for a household in the community was $51,016, and the median income for a family was $58,417. Males had a median income of $40,297 versus $28,036 for females. The per capita income for the community was $23,302. 6.8% of the population and 4.8% of families were below the poverty line. Out of the total people living in poverty, 10.1% are under the age of 18 and 4.4% are 65 or older.

Riverview is famous for multihome community property associations who charge residents annual homeowner fees. Most communities are situated on two-lane roads leading to unusually high volume traffic in a rural setting.
