Riverside High School is a public school in the community of Quincy, West Virginia, with its postal address in Belle, West Virginia.

The school, which serves grades 9-12, is a part of Kanawha County Schools.

It serves areas from Pratt, Belle, Witcher Creek, Cabin Creek, Cedar Grove, Chelyan, Chesapeake, East Bank, Glasgow, Campbells Creek, Malden, Rand, and Marmet, among others. It is located at 1 Warrior Way in Quincy, across from Interstate 64. It is one of eight public high schools in Kanawha County.

The school opened in 1999 from the consolidation of East Bank High School (where WVU standout and silouette for the NBA logo Jerry West attended) in East Bank and Dupont High School (where Randy Moss of the New England Patriots and Jason Williams attended) in Dupont City, WV (Postal Adress: Belle, WV). Riverside boasts many services to offer students and the surrounding communities. There is a full service branch of the Kanawha County Public Library. Cabin Creek Health Center has facilities in the building that are also open to students. All three partners are located within the building, but offer separate entrances for students and community members.

Riverside participates in the highest level of athletics that West Virginia provides, class AAA, among such other schools as Parkersburg, Morgantown, and Huntington, just to name a few. The biggest sport by far at the school is football, led by (as of fall 2008) 2nd year Coach Ralph Hensley, who in his 2007 Warriors head coaching debut led the team to a 7-3 regular season, including a one point upset of then #2 ranked [1]George Washington High School 21-20, and a well-played yet dissapointig loss in overtime against the [[2]]Capital High School Cougars in the first round of the state playoffs.

[edit] Schedule

The daily schedule of Riverside is a very debatable one amongst students and faculty. The very first bell starts at 7:18 A.M. and the Final Bell rings at 2:42 P.M. While the idea of getting out this soon appeals to everyone, the early start of the school makes it extremely difficult for some, especially those living in the town of Montgomery or other towns of equivalent distances, some 20 or more miles away. This means some students must get up very early, especially those who must ride the bus.

Riverside is on what is called a block schedule, consisting of 4 separate blocks each semester, divided into 100 minutes each. The school is on a two lunch rotation, with students either having the option of going 2 blocks, Lunch, 2 blocks, or 3 blocks, Lunch, 1 block. The lunch rotation is assorted by what floor the students' 3rd block is on. Every student having a 3rd block on the first floor has First Lunch, while every student having a 3rd block on the second floor has Second Lunch. The only exceptions to this rule are select classrooms on the second floor (who attend First Lunch for space purposes) and the Freshmen Class. All Freshmen have First Lunch.

Every Wednesday is Advisory ("Homeroom") Schedule, in which classes are shortened by 30 minutes and students attend their Advisor. Once a month this is changed, and students instead attend clubs. The real fun begins when the school has a county mandated "Early Dismissal Day" (just "Early Out" to the students) one Wednesday a month. This is scheduled for teacher prep time, and school dismisses two hours early, at 12:42 P.M.. This causes classes to be even shorter than they normally would (since it would be Advisor Schedule), and the class time drops from 100 minutes to about 55 minutes. Needless to say, students love these days, and the attendance rate on these days plummets, as there is no need to go (in the students' eyes).

School always starts the last week in August, and ends in either the first or second week in June. In 2007, the first day was August 28th, and the last day for non-Seniors will be June 9th. Seniors have always gotten out two weeks prior to the rest of the school, to give them time for Graduation and the infamous Senior Week. There are unconfirmed reports that beginning with August's Freshman Class, this will no longer be, as the county ended it so as to get more educational time. Seniors this year find that hilarious. This year, the Seniors' last day is next Friday, May the 16th. Riverside then hosts (as it does every year) one of the earliest Graduations, this year on May 21st, at 8:00 P.M. on the football field at Warrior Stadium. (see Graduation below)

Every year RHS has a Homecoming week, to welcome back the students with fun activities and dress-up days. It is also an informal way to welcome back the football team.

The dress-up days for Homecoming 2007 were: Monday-College Day Tuesday- Pirate Day Wednesday- Disney Day Thursday- Blackout Day Friday- WARRIORS GONE WILD! Day (School Spirit Day)

In 2007, Riverside played host to the Priceton Tigers from Princeton, WV. The final score of the game was very lopsided, with the Warriors crushing the Tigers 40-7.

The Homecoming Court consisted of the following students:

At halftime, the finalists for Homecoming court were announced. The winner, dubbed Mrs. Riverside, was Ellen Stanley. She was crowned by Mrs. Potter, principal, and Chelsea Hill, Mrs. Riverside '06.

Prom is tomorrow, May the 10th, from 8 P.M. to Midnight in the Riverside Commons Area (Cafeteria). The theme this year is "A Night on the Town". Everyone is excited, and expects it to be amazing. If it's not, Seniors may riot. More info coming soon...

Graduation is on the Wednesday after Seniors get out. This year it is on May 21st at 8 P.M. on the football field at Warrior Stadium. In case of rain, it will be on Thursday at the same time. If it rains on Thursday, it will be on Friday. If it rains on Friday, then the administration will throw up their hands in disbelief and curse their own bad planning...
