River East Collegiate

River East Collegiate is a high school located in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada that belongs to the River East Transcona School Division. River East has a school population of roughly 1,300, making it the 3rd biggest school in Manitoba. The school colors are blue, black, and white, and their school team name is the Kodiaks. The school takes pride in its extremely low drop-out rate: the lowest in Winnipeg.[citation needed]

River East Collegiate has many course opportunities, with languages such as German, French, and Spanish, along with exchange students coming from Asia, Europe, Mexico, and South America. The school is also home to one of the best AP (Advanced Placement) Programs in the nation. In 2007 alone the school was home to 4 National AP Scholars.

River East Collegiate is most well-known for its outstanding music program, under the direction of Band Director Jeff Kula and Choral Director Carol Ridd. The school is home to a wide variety of musical groups: two Concert Bands, a Concert Choir, two Jazz Bands, two Vocal Jazz Ensembles, a Women's Chamber Choir, a Wind Ensemble, a Percussion Ensemble, and a Contemporary Music Ensemble. The River East Collegiate Jazz Orchestra is the only Canadian school to ever be invited to participate in the Essentially Ellington Festival, hosted annually by Wynton Marsalis and Jazz at Lincoln Center, located in New York City. The festival is widely viewed as the most prestigious high school band festival on the planet where bands from across North America come to celebrate the music of the great Duke Ellington. The Jazz Orchestra has been invited to the Festival a total of four times: in 2003, 2004, 2007, and again in 2008. The school looks forward to being back at Essentially Ellington this May to have a chance to share the music of Ellington with the world.

River East Collegiate has many teams at both the Junior Varsity and Varsity levels. They have male and female teams in Basketball, Volleyball, Soccer, Golf, Hockey and ""Indoor/Outdoor Track and Field and a male-only Football team. They compete in the Kildonan Peguis Athletic Conference (KPAC). The school football team won the first annual ""Peguis Bowl"" in 2007 when they dominated there rival Miles Macdonell Collegiate Buckeyes by a score of 28-0. The school has a long tradition of athletic success, and the hundreds of KPAC championship banners hanging in the gym (some dating back to the 1960s) are proof of that.

The River East Collegiate CIP (Career Internship Program) is the most recognized and decorated transition program in the country. Students involved with the program are offered on-the-job experience they can get no where else to help them make the transition from high school to career. Although students are not paid for their work in the program, each student from the last 5 years involved with the program was hired by the company they were involved with after graduation.

For as long as River East Collegiate has been around, so has the student council. The student council works tirelessly to make the school a better and more interesting place with weekly meetings to plan such events as school dances, spirit weeks, "Karaoke In The Caf", event fundraisers, pep rallies, and much more.

River East Collegiate takes pride in its involvement with UNESCO (United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization). Over the years the school has been recognized repeatedly as one of the most involved with UNESCO in Canada. The school UNESCO group has done some very selfless and amazing things, such as raising money to buy cows, build wells, and raise money for AIDS prevention for people in Third World Countries.
