The River City Rivalry is an annual game played between Big East rivals University of Pittsburgh and University of Cincinnati. The rivalry itself is relatively new, played regularly only since 2005. The trophy has only existed for the most recent three games. Before the rivalry was titled, the two teams played each other in 1921, 1922, 1979, and 1981. The game is played either in Cincinnati or Pittsburgh.
[edit] Trophy
The Rivalry trophy was created in 2005 when Cincinnati joined the Big East conference. The teams had met previously various times throughout the history of the schools, but the most recent previous meeting was in 1981. When Cincinnati joined the Big East the teams decided to create a rivalry trophy that would help the new rivalry grow.
The trophy stands 46 inches tall. The base of the trophy is wood and has each team name as well as the Big East logo. Mounted on the base is a brass engine room telegraph. It has a Cincinnati side and a Pittsburgh side. The lever is pulled to the side of the school who has won the previous year's game. In front of the telegraph is a steel carved outline of the Ohio River's path from Pittsburgh to Cincinnati. Underneath it is various holes that are filled with discs for each team that has won. Currently Pitt has three discs in the trophy and Cincinnati has none.
