River Atlético Clube, usually known simply as River, is a Brazilian football club from Teresina, Piauí state.

On March 1, 1946, [1] the club was founded by Ginásio Leão XIII students, commanded by the teacher Anilthon Soares. [2] The Commendator Dionísio Brochado brought from São Paulo River Plate of Argentina kits, and then, the new club was named after the Argentine club, and adopted its colors and kits. [3]
In 1948, two years after the club was founded, River won its first state championship. [4]
In 1977, the club competed in the Brazilian Championship for the first time, finishing in the 41st place. [5]. The club competed in the championship again in 1978, finishing in the 69th place [6], in 1979, finishing in the 83th place [7], in 1981, finishing in the 39th place [8], and in 1982, finishing in the 44th place. [9]
In 2000, River competed in the Copa João Havelange, which was the competition that replaced the Brazilian Championship in that year. The club was in the yellow module (which was that season's equivalent to the second level), and was eliminated in the first stage. [10]

The club's home matches are usually played at Governador Alberto Tavares Silva stadium, nicknamed Albertão [1] which has a maximum capacity of 60,000 people.[11]
River also plays at Estádio Lindolfo Monteiro, nicknamed Lindoflinho, which has a maximum capacity of 8,000 people. [12]

The derby between River and Esporte Clube Flamengo is known as Rivengo. Rivengo is the truncation of the clubs' names, River and Flamengo. [13]
