Ritten (Renon) (Italian: Renon; German: Ritten; Archaic (870 AD): Ritano; Latin: Retinone) is a comune (municipality) in the province of Bolzano-Bozen in the Italian region Trentino-Alto Adige/Südtirol, As of 31 December 2004, it had a population of 7,144 and an area of 111 km².[1]
The municipality of Ritten (Renon) contains the frazioni (subdivisions, mainly villages and hamlets) Oberinn (Auna di Sopra), Unterinn (Auna di Sotto), Castel Novale, Campodazzo, Collalbo, Costalovara, Lengmoos (Longomoso), Lengstein (Longostagno), Madonnina, Mittelberg (Monte di Mezzo), Rotwand (Pietrarossa), Oberbozen (Soprabolzano), Signat (Signato), and Wangen (Vanga).
Ritten (Renon) borders the following municipalities: Barbiano, Bolzano, Castelrotto, Cornedo all'Isarco, Fiè allo Sciliar, San Genesio Atesino, Sarentino, and Villandro.
Ritten (Renon) is connected with Bolzano with a provincial road and with a cableway from Oberbozen, the longest cableway of the world in one track, about 4 km long and 12 minutes to travel.
This cableway replaced in 1960 the previous rack railway, built in 1911. The railway is still in function on the mountain side between Maria Himmelfahrt and Klobenstein.
Near Oberbozen (Soprabolzano) and Lengstein (Longostagno) are situated some groups of earth pyramids.
