The Rising Sun Tavern was originally built in 1760 as a home by Charles Washington, younger brother of George Washington. It became a tavern in 1784. Today it still functions as a tavern, complete with serving wenches.[3]

It was designated a National Historic Landmark in 1964[1], and added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1966.[2][4][5]
