Rising Sun High School opened in 1931 on Pearl Street in Rising Sun, Maryland. The School remained in that location until 1991 when it moved to its current location on Tiger Drive in North East, MD. The old building now serves as Rising Sun Middle School.

Rising Sun belongs to the Upper Chesapeake Bay Area Conference, featuring teams from both Cecil County and Harford County.
In recent years, Rising Sun's athletic department has seen success from its field hockey, volleyball, and wrestling programs, with numerous division 1A state titles. In 2007, Rising Sun won its first ever State wrestling title, going 18-0 in dual meets, winning both the 1A/2A state dual title, and taking the state title at the State Tournament. Currently the Rising Sun wrestling team has over 25 straight dual meet wins going back to last year. The field hockey program also won a state title, as did the volleyball program, placing the state title count at 4 for the 2006/2007 school year.
