As of the census[1] of 2000, there were 835 people, 345 households, and 212 families residing in the town. The population density was 497.9 people per square mile (191.9/km²). There were 483 housing units at an average density of 288.0/sq mi (111.0/km²). The racial makeup of the town was 93.65% White, 0.24% African American, 0.36% Native American, 0.12% Asian, 2.87% from other races, and 2.75% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 6.23% of the population.
There were 345 households out of which 24.6% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 48.1% were married couples living together, 9.0% had a female householder with no husband present, and 38.3% were non-families. 35.1% of all households were made up of individuals and 21.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.30 and the average family size was 2.98.
In the town the population was spread out with 23.7% under the age of 18, 6.8% from 18 to 24, 22.6% from 25 to 44, 22.4% from 45 to 64, and 24.4% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 43 years. For every 100 females there were 88.1 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 83.0 males.
The median income for a household in the town was $19,118, and the median income for a family was $30,000. Males had a median income of $22,750 versus $15,625 for females. The per capita income for the town was $11,636. About 19.4% of families and 24.4% of the population were below the poverty line, including 33.7% of those under age 18 and 25.0% of those age 65 or over.
