Medal of Honor: Rising Sun is the 5th installment of the Medal Of Honor series, released by Electronic Arts in November 2003. Rising Sun is another first-person shooter, set in World War II during the Pacific War. This game features single-player and multiplayer capabilities (terminated as of November 2006). In the single-player game, the player assumes the role of Cpl. Joseph Griffin of the United States Marine Corps.

A sequel was originally planned in which players would have assumed the role of Joseph's brother Donnie. However, the sequel was quietly canceled after Rising Sun received poor reviews.

[edit] Mission 1: Day of Infamy/Pearl Harbor

Joseph Griffin (the main character) is awakened from his sleep aboard the USS California on December 7th, 1941, during the attack on Pearl Harbor. After finding his way through the interior of the ship, fighting numerous fires, and rescuing several crewmates, Griffin goes topside, and begins to shoot at the attacking planes and their torpedoes. After about 3 minutes, Griffin is blown overboard. He is fished out of the water by a PT boat and continues the fight. However, due to several hits to the engine, the PT boat and its turret are put out of action. At that precise moment, the USS Arizona is blown up by several dive bombers. After fending off the Japanese Navy, Griffin is off to his next stop: The Philippines.

[edit] Mission 2: Fall of the Philippines

Griffin is sent to the Philippines, and is patrolling a bridge when an enemy dive bomber attacks the bridge, killing most of the marines around him. He rushes up to find his brother Donnie, an engineer, attempting to get some explosives he left in a truck to blow the bridge. After fighting his way through the city, (going through sewers and even a baseball diamond), Griffin finally gets the explosives. Donnie takes a Japanese tank and covers Griffin and his driver as they escape. However, Donnie's tank is ambushed by several Japanese troops, and he is given up for dead.Joe was bitter that he lost his brother. However, he survives, and apparently is forced through the infamous Bataan Death March.

[edit] Mission 3: Midnight Raid on Guadalcanal

Griffin is sent to Guadalcanal. The Mission begins with a ride on a River raft. After picking off Several enemies, Griffin has the choice of Coming out of the Raft or staying in the Raft. If he leaves the raft, he moves through the Thick Jungle, encountering Spider Holes and Snipers in Trees. He then attacks a bunker, getting 5 Key Intelligence Papers, and reboards the raft. If he chooses not to leave the Raft, everything that has just happened previously does not happen. Whether he reboards the Raft or stays on the Raft, he eventually comes up on a Bunker, killing a Machine Gunner and several Japanese Soldiers. One of the Marines is hit, and falls off the edge of the boat. While he hangs there, a Crocodile finishes him off. After leaving the Raft, Griffin's Squad (along with a Second Squad) is caught in an Ambush. After killing the Japanese defenders, he pushes through the Island, destroying defenses. Eventually, Griffin finds an Anti Aircraft Gun, destroying a tank and killing many defenders.

[edit] Mission 4: Pistol Pete

After pushing through some thick Guadalcanal Jungle with two US Marines, Griffin stumbles upon a Valley, where Japanese soldiers are guarding three Prisoners. After freeing Lieutenant Harrison, Griffin and Harrison proceed to a Howitzer Gun. Griffin uses the Howitzer to destroy a tank and Several Japanese Soldiers, and Harrison leads Griffin to a Cave where several Japanese artillery emplacements (referred to by the Marines as Pistol Pete's) are hidden, firing away at Henderson Field. After destroying the Guns, Japanese Soldiers begin pouring out of a Cave and on to a Bridge. Harrison gets shot, but still manages to light a charge to blow up the bridge. As you reach the other side of the Bridge, explosives detonate, sending Harrison and the bridge to the Valley Below. However, the Player may choose to save Lieutenant Harrison before the bridge is detonated.

[edit] Mission 5: Singapore Sling

In this mission, Joe Griffin leaves his fellow Marines to join the OSS on a dangerous, covert mission behind Japanese lines, armed only with two pistols. After pushing through Singapore docks, Griffin meets his contact; a Japanese American named Ichiro Tanaka, posing as an Imperial Officer. After a rickshaw crash, Tanaka reassures a Japanese patrol, the two proceed on. Griffin drops into an open-ditch sewer, emerging at the corner of a building and entering a warehouse. Griffin frees a POW, and meets his second contact, a rebellious officer named Major Bromley. Bromley gives Griffin caltrops and Griffin uses them to knock a car unusable and its passengers unconscious. Stealing Colonel Kandler's uniform, Griffin enters the rooftops of a building and frees another prisoner of war. After dropping through a skylight and freeing a third and final prisoner, Tanaka picks up Griffin, driving him to a hotel. A meeting begins, however, several seconds into the meeting, the real Colonel Kandler busts into the room, in his boxers, declaring Griffin an Imposter. At that point, Bromley drops through a skylight and hands you a silenced Sten Gun, and you blast away the room. Proceeding out through the building, blasting away everything in his path, you make a climatic escape when Tanaka drives by with a double-decker bus, allowing you to escape. Shima, Kandler, and General Borov escape. Neither Kandler nor Borov are seen or mentioned again in the game.

[edit] Mission 6: In search of Yamashita's gold

After Griffin and Bromley escape from the Axis Summit, the scene shifts to the jungles of Burma, where a specially trained group of British soldiers, known as Chindits, are preparing an assault. However, plans change when a Flying Tiger Pilot is brought down behind enemy lines. Griffin's two Chindit team members are quickly killed by Japanese soldiers when the mission begins, depending on the player's actions. Racing through the jungle, Griffin kills several snipers and proceeds to the crash site, where Tanaka is waiting for Griffin. Entering a temple, Griffin and Tanaka destroy Japanese Officer's Sake Supplies and, after rescuing the pilot, places a Black Lotus Flower found on the Buddha statue on a pedestal, proceeds throughout the Temple. Bromley hijacks a Helicopter and rescues Griffin and Tanaka, and not a moment too soon. An explosion from a sabotaged gun destroys the temple grounds.

[edit] Mission 7: A Bridge on the River Kwai

Griffin, Bromley, and Tanaka parachute into Burma again to follow the path of Yamashita's gold. The Battle takes place on the historic Burma Railway, a group of bridges built as supply crossings, built by forced labor of thousands of Prisoners of War and local natives. After being thrown out of his plane, Griffin pushes through the Thick, Burma Jungle. Grabbing a T11 LMG, Griffin proceeds to a Prisoner of War camp. Rushing through the forest, Griffin Eventually makes it to a railway crossing, which has been destroyed by a train collision. After destroying the bridge using the fuel cars, Bromley and Griffin complete the Mission, falling into a hijacked Japanese seaplane.

[edit] Mission 8: Supercarrier Sabotage

Allied intelligence reported that Yamashita's gold is on a Japanese supercarrier, the 'Toshikaze'. Tanaka is responsible for getting everyone onboard the ship, and once you're on this ship, there is no turning back. Proceeding through the deck, Griffin kills several sailors. After opening all eight vents, destroying all four fuel monitors, sabotaging all four fuel valves, and after a brief meet-up with Bromley, Griffin enters the gold room. Interestingly, as Japanese soldiers enter the room, they are wearing gas masks. The room fills with green gas--the fuel fumes--and Griffin loses consciousness. When Griffin finally awakes, Tanaka, posed as a waiter, frees Griffin, but then is captured by Shima. Bromley captures a guard in response. As a final jab to enrage Bromley, Shima kills Tanaka by cutting his throat with a sword. Shima bolts from the room, entering the aircraft hangar. Griffin battles his way through, getting a glimpse at Donnie riding up an aircraft elevator with Shima using him as a human shield. Griffin and Bromley eventually enter a dive bomber, escaping the supercarrier moments before it explodes. The ending to Medal of Honor: Heroes revealed that Joseph was planning POW rescue raids which means that Donnie was eventually rescued by Joseph later in the war. It's assumed that Joseph killed Shima when he rescued Donnie.

The award winning soundtrack in Rising Sun was orchestrated by Christopher Lennertz. Michael Giacchino, composer of the soundtrack for Frontline, left to work on the soundtracks of the rivalry series Call of Duty, after which Lennertz took over. Lennertz's score received overall positive reviews.[citation needed]

A promotional CD soundtrack was released for the game. Digital versions of the soundtrack were also made available and are currently for sale off of music services like iTunes.

[edit] Corporal Joseph Griffin

Introduced in-Day of Infamy

In Griffins hometown of Mather, Pennsylvania, he was everybody's All-American. A star athlete in High School, he found it only natural that he would enlist in the Marines. Seven years later, he is just as proud to serve his country. As tensions rose between the US and Japan, Griffin grew concerned that there may be a real war, and that his younger brother Donnie may enlist. Even though Joseph discouraged him, Donnie signed up. Universally liked by everyone in his squad, Joseph is an asset to any platoon. Strong and brave, he is always ready for any assignment. Although he works well in teams, some of his superiors believe that his future lies in solo missions. He never speaks in the game despite being the protagonist.

In Mather, Pennsylvania, Marines Private First Class Donnie Griffin was known as Joe Griffin's kid Brother. Donnie was proud of his Brother Joe, but he yearned for the chance to prove himself. When a neighbors house caught on fire, it was thirteen year-old Donnie who kicked in the back door and pulled two children to safety. After that, no one called him "kid" anymore. As a sophomore receiver on the High School Football Team, Donnie was named to the All-League team with his Brother, a Senior. When Joe graduated and join the Marines, Donnie became the Quarterback and lead the team to two Consecutive Country Titles. Ask him who his hero is, and he'll point to his brother. Ask him who the better football player is, and he'll point to the Waynesburg Central High record Books. Donnie is attached to a demolition outfit based in the Philippines. He is captured in the second mission as you flee the island he is stationed on.

Since the fall of Singapore to the Japanese, Major Phillip Bromley of the BSOEB has been organizing resistance from within the City of Singapore. Living in and moving through the Catacombs beneath the city, he continues to sabotage Japanese interests and to courier people and information through Singapore. It should be noted that Bromley remains angry at the British Leadership that failed to prepare for the invasion even when he provided Accurate Information about the Invaders. While some British Commanders have threatened him with insubordination, more influential ones consider him a National Hero.

The fledgling OSS has few more competent operatives in the field than Colonel Floyd. As Washington has struggled to build and integrate the new organization into the war effort, Floyd has been given considerable in developing contacts in East Asia. A habitual planner, Floyd prepares diligently for any contingency. While he is the ideal man for a small and growing organization, Colonel Floyd's focus on winning the battle can obscure his perspective on the overall war. This resourceful man from rural Montana can take care of himself.

It takes a rare bird to enjoy working with explosives, and Lieutenant Harrison enjoys his work perhaps a little bit too much. More than one officer has wondered about his stability. He is both feared and respected by his squaddies for his willingness to do just about any demo job, no matter how dangerous or crazy it may be. His enthusiasm for explosive has turned into an expertise; few Marines in the entire Pacific Campaign know how to bring down a Bridge or a Building like Lieutenant Harrison. Harrison dies when he accidentally blows himself up trying to destroy a bridge on 'Pistol Pete Showdown'. However he can be saved before the charges explode.

Killed in-Supercarrier Sabotage

Like many Japanese-Americans, Ichiro came under suspicion as the Empire of the Rising Sun began to rattle its sabers. Born to Japanese immigrants in Honolulu, Hawaii, Harry has never seen himself as anything but American. To avoid the looks and insults, he joined the OSS. Because of his fluency in Japanese, he had been hurried through training and inserted into Singapore as a Japanese trader. Using his cover, he has been able to eavesdrop on sidewalk conversations among the occupying Japanese soldiers. Tanaka is also a trained pilot. He ends up being killed by Shima in "Supercarrier Sabotage", while trying to save you.

[edit] Jack "Gunny" Lawton

A "tough-as-nails" gunnery sergeant in the Marine Corps. "Gunny" is first seen on the deck of the battleship California, with a Browning Automatic Rifle (B.A.R.) in one hand, and a shotgun in the other. Quickly handing the B.A.R. off to you, so you have something to shoot down the enemy planes with, (though most players would use the mounted machine guns to do this.) He later goes on to fight in the Philippines with you, riding atop a light tank while you fend off enemy suicide runners with pole mines. He also leads you on your scouting mission in Guadalcanal along with a handful of other Marines. Later on, in the level "Pistol Pete Showdown," he is seen briefing you and two other Marines while riding in a jeep across Henderson Airfield. After the completion of "Pistol Pete Showdown" he tells colonel Michael Floyd that you're just the man he's looking for to recruit for the OSS. Gunny bears a striking resemblance to R Lee Ermy.

A high ranking Commander of the Japanese Imperial Navy. He is foreshadowed in the early missions, one of your objectives in "The Fall of the Philippines" mission is to recover a photo of this sinister villain. He is first seen in the flesh in the "Singapore Sling" mission. He speeds by in his staff car, almost killing the rickshaw escorting you and Tanaka to the hotel. He is later seen at the hotel addressing several German officers about the wealth that the Japanese Empire has discovered in eastern Asia. He rushes out of the room when Bromley drops in. He is next seen in the "Supercarrier Sabotage" interrogating you. When Tanaka tries to free you, Shima holds him at sword point, and slits his throat to anger Bromley. Shima is seen for the final time raising up on a platform to the upper deck with your captured brother Donnie, "Say goodbye American fool. This is as close to your brother as you will ever be!" he shouts. Since Medal of Honor: Heroes revealed that Joseph rescued Donnie, it's assumed that Joseph killed Shima.

A German officer headed to the meeting at the hotel in the "Singapore Sling" mission. You and Bromley sabotage his staff car when he drives by. You steal his uniform and infiltrate the Axis summit. While at the meeting, He barges in shouting that you are an impostor, and that you have stolen his uniform. He manages to escape alive, despite Bromley shooting dead all the other German officers. He is neither seen or mentioned again in the game.

A Russian traitor to the Allies. He plans to replace Stalin and declare peace with Germany. He too manages to escape the hotel alive during the shootout in the "Singapore Sling" mission. He is neither seen or mentioned again in the game.

This pilot of the Flying Tigers is shot down while flying over the palace in the "Yamashita's Gold" mission. You and your Australian Chindits try to save him at the crash site, but he has been captured by the Japanese by the time you reach the crash site. Tanaka meets you at the crash site and follows you to the palace. Once in the lower levels of the palace, you save Raj, locate Bromley, and escape by helicopter.
