Ripple current

Ripple current refers to the AC portion of the current signal applied to a device in its application. Although this term defines an AC portion of the applied signal, it is usually in reference to the small level of variation of DC signals encountered in a power supply application.
Ripple current ratings for capacitors can be somewhat arbitrary. Although the EIA has standards for calculating ripple current ratings, some manufacturers use their own methods.
