Rio Vista is a city in Johnson County, Texas, United States. The population was 757 in 2006. There is a bit of contraversy on how to pronounce this town's name. One being "RYE-O Vista".This one is more common among the rustic elder citizens. The other being "REE-O Vista" which is more common among the youthful citizens and out-of-towners.

[edit] Geography

Rio Vista is located at 32°14′16″N, 97°22′38″W (32.237783, -97.377151)[3].

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 0.8 square miles (2.0 km²), all of it land.

[edit] Demographics

As of the census[1] of 2000, there were 656 people, 236 households, and 178 families residing in the city. The population density was 828.3 people per square mile (320.6/km²). There were 260 housing units at an average density of 328.3/sq mi (127.1/km²). The racial makeup of the city was 87.27% White, 0.15% Native American, 2.74% from other races, and 1.83% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 13.18% of the population. This accounts for the incorrect way locals pronounce the name of their own town. As more Hispanics move into the area, hopefully the situation will be rectified. Rio Vista is Spanish for "river view" and is properly pronounced REE - oh VISTA, not RYE-vista as it is pronounced locally. Mexia, Texas has a similar dilemma, but has steadfastly remained "Muh HAY uh" rather than the correct "Me HEE ah". No doubt, at some point, city leaders will be called upon to address this issue with a formal proclamation.

There were 236 households out of which 41.9% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 55.1% were married couples living together, 15.7% had a female householder with no husband present, and 24.2% were non-families. 20.8% of all households were made up of individuals and 7.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.78 and the average family size was 3.23.

In the city the population was spread out with 31.6% under the age of 18, 9.9% from 18 to 24, 30.3% from 25 to 44, 18.8% from 45 to 64, and 9.5% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 32 years. For every 100 females there were 102.5 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 95.2 males.

The median income for a household in the city was $30,859, and the median income for a family was $31,696. Males had a median income of $27,206 versus $18,333 for females. The per capita income for the city was $12,806. About 6.7% of families and 11.3% of the population were below the poverty line, including 16.0% of those under age 18 and 13.7% of those age 65 or over.
