Rik Gates ran as an independent candidate while he was in his final year as a student at Acadia University. At the age of 22 years and 9 months, Rik was the youngest candidate running for Member of Parliament in Nova Scotia and was one of the youngest candidates across the country. Rik's campaign platform was adequate funding of universities and education in Nova Scotia. His campaign highlighted the Federal government's cut backs on provincial transfer payments to Nova Scotia that subsidized funded education and post-secondary institutions. Rik garnered only 200 votes in an election that was dominated by the issue of free trade with the Unites States.
