Rigel Sauri (born in 1966 in Mérida, in the Mexican state of Yucatán) is a Mexican artist who paints murals and pictures. He currently lives in Minnetonka, Minnesota, in the United States.
Rigel Sauri moved to the Mexico City with his family when he was seven years old. When he was seventeen years old he left the City of Mexico and it was wandered for few years. He lived in many tourist towns in Mexico, including Acapulco, Ixtapa, Cancún and Cozumel. Around 1990, Sauri met his wife in Xtapa. She was from San Pablo, Minnesota, so they moved to the United States. Although they are now divorced, she sometimes helps Sauri paint the bottoms of his murals.
Sauri learned to paint in his home. He came from an artistic family, including his mother, a prolific artist. When he chose to paint for his race he attended art classes. Eventually he decided that the classes stifled his talent, and he resigned. He knew that he had a certain talent but he did not know if it was possible to paint for a living; nevertheless, he was often asked to paint murals by houses or buildings. He was interested in the culture of the natives, and so he went to study archaeology and anthropology. His work with the natives frames his artistic work. According to Sauri, the natives do not understand the dangerous and modern life of the white society. Sauri believes that there is an enormous space between him and the natives due to his education and his social level.
Sauri paints murals and paintings for companies, art collectors, and private houses and restaurants. His commercial murals are generally less detailed. Many of his murals on Mexican restaurants are of the natives. Sauri has painted a mural for Underwater Sports Incorporated, because that group had gone in an expedition to reefs in the Caribbean. Generally, his art style is bright in colour, and includes realistic animals and people.
