The current name of the article, "Rienz-Rienza", is a combination of the German name ("Rienz") and the Italian name ("Rienza"). This type of bilingual naming was found to be undesirable in a survey at Talk:Communes of South Tyrol, see also Wikipedia:Naming conventions (geographic names)#Multiple local names. The three most plausible options are listed below, please cast your votes. Markussep 17:38, 2 April 2007 (UTC)

Rienz
- Support. Large German speaking majority (see census data below). No clear preference for either name in English usage. Markussep 18:09, 2 April 2007 (UTC)

This is the census I referred to: [1]. The Rienz flows through Toblach (86% German), Niederdorf, Italy (93%), Welsberg-Taisten (96%), Olang (97%), Bruneck (83%), St. Lorenzen (97%), Kiens (97%), Vintl (98%), Mühlbach, Italy (95%), Rodeneck (100%) and Brixen (73%). Some English use statistics:
- Google Scholar:
- Rienz river 10
- Rienza river 19
- Google (only English language, .org, -wikipedia):
- Rienz river 34
- Rienza river 18 Markussep 18:09, 2 April 2007 (UTC)
One reason I haven't !voted is that these data are so flawed. Almost all of the Google hits for Rienz are either from German text or from 19th century sources, like Henry van Dyke; and the results for Rienza are almost as bad. Septentrionalis PMAnderson 01:44, 4 April 2007 (UTC)
- I agree that these English usage data are too limited to indicate a preference. Like for the municipalities, I would prefer taking the name in the local majority language name, which would be "Rienz". Markussep 07:36, 4 April 2007 (UTC)
- Google Books:
- Rienz river: 3
- Rienza river: 5
- river Rienz: 15
- river Rienza: 3
