I disagree. The Riddle Game is an ancient and highly respected form of intellectual combat, found in Greek, Celtic, and Norse myth (and others, I'm sure, though these are my areas of personal knowledge). The Riddle Game should be distinguished from simple riddles, which serve chiefly as entertainment. The Riddle Game is played for high stakes, and the outcome is usually of great importance, such as Bilbo's attainment of the ring, and Odin's riddling of the giant Vafthruthnir, from which he learns of the future of the nine worlds.

I Disagree as well. The riddle game is, by its definition far more important than a simple riddle, the fact that it is a game implies a winner a loser. The stakes are higher and it is used almost solely in mythology, nobody in the real world wagers anything of value on a riddle. People who succeed at winning a riddle game are nearly always granted fame and heroism, even if they lacked it previously, such as Bilbo, Oedipus, or even people who answer a leprechaun's riddle.

I think this article could stand on its own for the reasons mentioned above. If someone were to add a history of riddle games including more details regarding the various stories as well as where they first appeared I think it could be a really interesting article. Alexforcefive
