[edit] Block

You have been temporarily blocked from editing for vandalism of Wikipedia. If you wish to make useful contributions, you may do so after the block expires.

RexNL 21:39, 10 March 2006 (UTC)

I'm very confused; I have a note on my talk page from you about being blocked, but http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Special%3ALog&type=block&user=&page=User%3ARichardHarrold your blocklog] shows that you've never been blocked. Could you give me a bit more information; was it another account that I blocked? Did the block reason say "Autoblocked because your IP has been recently used by..."? There are a lot of instances where a user could be blocked as a result of collateral damage from another block; if you'll give me some extra information, I'll try to figure out why and how it was that you were blocked. If you'd like, you can look at the log of indivudals I've blocked: your name isn't there. Essjay TalkContact 23:55, 10 February 2006 (UTC)
No problem. Here's the basic deal:
Blocks work off of two things: the username, and the user's IP address. When a user's username is blocked, if they try to sign out and edit from their IP address, that address is automatically blocked by the site software in order to prevent them from evading the block. (This is called autoblock, and unfortunately, is done by the software but uses the admin's name; the admin doesn't have any way of knowing that it happened.) This is ususally a good thing; the problem is, some people have "dynamic" IP addresses, meaning that the IP address changes from time to time (some, like AOL, change every 15 minutes and on every page load, so the IP is different from one click to the next). What happens is, someone uses an address and gets blocked, then someone else is assigned that address (by the ISP, not Wikipedia, we have nothing to do with assigning IPs) and tries to edit, causing the software to think the blocked user is evading the block and triggering an autoblock. (The software has no way of knowing that the IP has been reassigned.) This is a big problem, but one that we are unable to solve, since we can't control how the ISP's assign their IP addresses.
A second type of block can happen as well: When users edit the site without logging in, thier edits are recorded via thier IP address. If the addresss is engaging in vandalism, it may be blocked. As in the above case, if that IP is later assigned to a different person, that person will also be blocked. Even worse, if that IP is assigned to a logged in user, the logged in user will be blocked, even though thier account isn't. These are the worst kind of blocks; they provide no notice whatsoever! (Autoblocks leave a difficult find message on a special page, but unless a person is refreshing that page constantly they won't notice. When an IP block affects a logged in user, there is no message at all; the user will simply be blocked until the IP's block expires. Unless the blocked user tells the administrators what their IP address is, there will be no way of discovering what caused the block.)
My guess is one of the two happened to you; either you were assigned an IP that was autoblocked, or you were assigned an IP that I had blocked because un-logged in users were using it to vandalize. In the future, if you have a similar problem, send me an email (essjaywiki at gmail dot com) and include the IP address and block reason (both will appear on the block notice) and I'll take care of it immediately. Alternatively, you can add {{unblock}} to your userpage with a notice that you believe you have been affected by an autoblock or the block of an IP. You will still need to post the block message, and perhaps your IP, so email is probably the best way to preserve privacy, if that is a concern.
The only other thing you can do is to complain to your ISP that their way of assigining IP addresses is causing you problems, and ask them to crack down on vandals using thier service as well as change the way they assign IP addresses. Complaints from customers are far more effective than pleas and threats from Wikipedia's administrators.
Happy editing, and if I can be of any help, let me know. Oh, and:

[edit] U2

Hello...I don't have a regular "U2 fan" template...the one on my userpage is homemade pretty much just for my own page. To tell the truth, I'm not even sure how to go about making it accessible - - I steal often from User:Essjay. Ask him, and he'll point you in the right direction; he's master of all things wiki and an all around good egg. Sorry I couldn't help; I would if I could! KHM03 00:18, 11 February 2006 (UTC)

[edit] deleted category

I'm sorry if I annoyed you with the deletion, but categories exist to help people find wikipedia articles, not to find material about users. This isn't a social networking space, in which the point is to let people know about ourselves, it's an odd sort of encyclopedia, in which the point is to let people know information about the world around them.

If you want the world to know what albums are important to you, then myspace or friendster or something like that is the place to do it. On the other hand, if you know interesting information about those albums that doesn't exist in current wiki articles, then this is a great place to be. - DavidWBrooks 14:20, 10 March 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Victoria of the United Kingdom

Please stick to Wikipedia article title naming conventions (eg, Anne of Great Britain, etc.) When there's more than one monarch with the same first name, we use Elizabeth II of the United Kingdom, etc. -- Curps 15:53, 30 March 2006 (UTC) It is WP policy to place reigning monarchs under the format <name> of country. Consorts, to distinguish them, use title, as in Queen, Prince, etc. Victoria of the United Kingdom means queen-regnant. Queen Victoria of the United Kingdom would mean queen consort, ie, wife of a king. FearÉIREANN\(caint) 20:22, 30 March 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Image Tagging Image:EwellPCorgan-03.jpg

Warning sign
This media may be deleted.

Thanks for uploading Image:EwellPCorgan-03.jpg. I notice the 'image' page currently doesn't specify who created the content, so the copyright status is unclear. If you have not created this media yourself then you need to argue that we have the right to use the media on Wikipedia (see copyright tagging below). If you have not created the media yourself then you should also specify where you found it, i.e., in most cases link to the website where you got it, and the terms of use for content from that page.

If the media also doesn't have a copyright tag then you must also add one. If you created/took the picture, audio, or video then you can use {{GFDL-self}} to release it under the GFDL. If you believe the media qualifies as fair use, please read fair use, and then use a tag such as {{Non-free fair use in|article name}} or one of the other tags listed at Wikipedia:Image copyright tags#Fair_use. See Wikipedia:Image copyright tags for the full list of copyright tags that you can use.

If you have uploaded other media, please check that you have specified their source and copyright tagged them, too. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. Note that any unsourced and untagged images will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. Thank you. Tempshill 19:30, 10 March 2006 (UTC)

[edit] About the above

Hi,

I notice a lot of complaints here about poor practices when uploading pictures.

  • Please don't grab pictures from elsewhere on the web and upload them. Everything you see on the Web is copyrighted and it's a violation of Wikipedia policy to upload them here, with several narrow fair use exceptions. There are few of these, and the best assumption to make is that anything you see on the web is copyrighted.

Thanks - Tempshill 19:30, 10 March 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Copyrights

No, don't superimpose a copyright statement in the photo, that always makes it look like hell when it's scaled, and besides it's not appropriate for our use (and doesn't add anything). You just didn't cite the source of the photo when you uploaded. You need to do so, which usually means you list the website you got it from. If the photo came from a source other than a web page, you need to document why it's 'copyrightedfreeuse' in a way that is verifiable by other editors.

The trouble of course is that there are dozens of uploads per day by people who don't care about violating copyrights, and most of these users just tag all their uploads with "CopyrightedFreeUse" or one of the fair use tags, in the belief this'll stop the image from getting deleted. Tempshill 19:39, 10 March 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Ewell Organ pictures

Hello - Saw your note on my talk page. Sounds like the best thing to do is for you to add the template tag {{NoRightsReserved}} on these photos, if that's OK with the original photographers and whoever created the "merged" image. Putting the tag on the images makes a lot of automated image and page processing possible. Visit each image description page, and replace the {{no source}} tag with {{tl|NoRightsReserved}.

[edit] Image copyright problem with Image:Russell Lissack.jpg

Thanks for uploading Image:Russell Lissack.jpg. However, the image may soon be deleted unless we can determine the copyright holder and copyright status. The Wikimedia Foundation is very careful about the images included in Wikipedia because of copyright law (see Wikipedia's Copyright policy).

The copyright holder is usually the creator, the creator's employer, or the last person who was transferred ownership rights. Copyright information on images is signified using copyright templates. The three basic license types on Wikipedia are open content, public domain, and fair use. Find the appropriate template in Wikipedia:Image copyright tags and place it on the image page like this: {{TemplateName}}.

Please signify the copyright information on any other images you have uploaded or will upload. Remember that images without this important information can be deleted by an administrator. If you have any questions, feel free to contact me. Thank you. android79 17:47, 10 March 2006 (UTC)

Hi there - I got the pic on the Google Image Search. The original location is at http://zeppelin.blogdrive.com/images/Russell%20Lissack.jpg.
That's only half of the problem. You need to indicate this image's copyright status as well. Typically, you can't just use GIS to find an image and upload it to Wikipedia. We can't use copyrighted material here unless there's a valid fair-use claim you can make. android79 18:02, 10 March 2006 (UTC)

And, regarding Image:TomSmithEditors01.jpg -- you can't just crop a copyrighted photo and them claim it as a screenshot. Please do some more reading on Wikipedia's policies regarding copyright before uploading anything else. android79 18:39, 10 March 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Image Tagging for Image:MelfordPC-01.jpg

Thanks for uploading Image:MelfordPC-01.jpg. The image has been identified as not specifying the source and creator of the image, which is required by Wikipedia's policy on images. If you don't indicate the source and creator of the image on the image's description page, it may be deleted some time in the next seven days. If you have uploaded other images, please verify that you have provided source information for them as well.

For more information on using images, see the following pages:
