Edward Ames Temple (September 23, 1831 – February 12, 1909) was an American banker and the founder of what is known today as the Principal Financial Group.

Edward Temple died the night of February 12, 1909 from a heart attack at the age of 79, after suddenly becoming ill during the afternoon. While he had long suffered from asthma and heart problems, Edward had been in fair health but had felt his death was forecoming.

Shortly after his death Banker's Life Association became a mutual company, and would go on to become the Principal Financial Group. Edward Temple is buried in Chariton cemetary.
