[edit] Business Description

[edit] Corporate History

Auralog was founded in 1987 and is headquarted in Montigny-le-Bretonneux, a commune in the southwestern suburbs of Paris, France.

Founded in 1987, Auralog creates programs for homeschooling, individuals, libraries, government operations, and basic education or schools. Their software programs include 'Tell Me More', the first language learning method based on the use of speech recognition technology. The program aims to cover all skills required to learn a language, including reading and writing, listening and speaking, grammar, vocabulary and culture. There are currently 10 languages available for these programs: Spanish, Latin American Spanish, English, French, German, Italian, Dutch, Chinese, Japanese, and Arabic. The availability of the language varies by solution.

[edit] Application

Auralog's 'Tell Me More' software works on an interactive basis that evaluates a language student's progress as they work, and uses their results to suggest the activities best suited to their needs.

This personalized learning approach includes choosing between three distinct lesson modes:

1. FREE TO ROAM MODE. This flexible mode is organized by workshops according to the skills or topics to be worked on. These include workshops on lessons, culture, vocabulary, grammar, oral and written. Some activities are geared to help a student work on several skills and/or subjects. Free To Roam Mode gives the student more freedom in navigation and allows them to chnge the options of different activities, such as the level of difficulty for speech recognition.

2. GUIDED MODE. Different learning paths are offered in this lesson mode. Most options cannot be changed from the default settings. However, a student can adjust the percentage of activities indicator. After they've completed a certain number of exercises, an arrow at the bottom of the screen will blink, indicating that they can move on to the next activity. The scale is set by default at 50%, meaning that the student must complete half of the exercises before they can continue. If they proceed according to the default setting, they will have 50% of each activity marked as "Completed" in the Progress Chart.

3. DYNAMIC MODE. In this mode, the student can choose to work according to one of the objectives offered, after which point 'Tell Me More' adapts the linguistic content to help students work on the skills that they need to improve the most, as calculated by their performance ine ach activity. The student chooses one of the objectives offered. These objectives work on either knowledge or skills. If the student wants an approach where learning evolves and adapts to his or her profile and needs, the Dynamic Mode is the best option.

'Tell Me More' gives the option of total immersion, which optimizes a student's progress by completely surrounding them in the language they're learning. Much like going to a foreign country. A student can also create their own audio CDs, so that they can take audio extracts from their dialogues and videos and listen to those extracts using their own personal audio devices, such as MP3s or CD Players.

[edit] Content

'Tell Me More' offers up to 950 hours of learning per language. 5,000 exercises aim to make learning interactive and effective. These exercises are broken down into 37 types of activities, which are further broken down into 6 workshops. The different activities of the Lesson, Cultural, Grammar, Vocabular, Oral and Written Workshops allow the student to practice and master the communication skills essential to language learning.

[edit] Technology

'Tell Me More' offers speech recognition technology that allows the student to asses their pronunciation and to improve it through the use of graphs and 3D animations. Their SETS technology automatically detects their pronunciations errors and singles them out so a student can work on them specifically. MPEG videos and interactive dialogues also help facilitate a student's immersion in the language and its culture, while the interface, animated help and language tools are relatively user-friendly and make it intuitive to navigate within the program.

[edit] Criticism

Some people have criticized the program for not being available on MAC computers. Another critique is that some find the software to be too advanced for a complete novice, as their model seems to be based on total immersion in the language.
