[edit] Photographs requested

Photographs of the following are most welcome:

  • Any drawn or painted portraits of Richard Hakluyt.
  • The tablet erected in Bristol Cathedral to Hakluyt's memory.
  • The monument to Hakluyt in Westminster Abbey. (There is no monument – see comment below. Jacklee 00:00, 12 May 2007 (UTC))

Thanks! Cheers, Jacklee 20:31, 21 April 2007 (UTC)

[edit] No memorial to Hakluyt in Christ Church, Oxford

I happened to be in Oxford this week, so I visited Christ Church, the Oxford college, on 2 May 2007 to see if there was a monument to Richard Hakluyt that I could photograph for the article. Unfortunately, there does not appear to be any monument to Hakluyt either in Christ Church Cathedral, Oxford, or elsewhere in the college grounds. Thought I would make a note of this in case anyone else had the same idea. Cheers, Jacklee 23:14, 3 May 2007 (UTC)

[edit] No memorial to Hakluyt in Westminster Abbey

There is no memorial to Richard Hakluyt in Westminster Abbey either, according to the Assistant Keeper of Muniments at the Abbey Library. Looks like the only extant memorial is the one at Bristol Cathedral – it would be great if someone could photograph it for this article. Cheers, Jacklee 23:58, 11 May 2007 (UTC)

Dear Miss Reynolds,

It's a shame that there is no monument, but nonetheless thank you for the very interesting reply, and particularly for clarifying that "St Peter's Church" is, in fact, a reference to the Abbey itself. When coming across this fact I was a bit puzzled by it, as I could not find any other reference to a church named St Peter's in the Abbey grounds. I will update the Wikipedia article accordingly.

Dear Mr Lee,

Yes, the date of burial for Hakluyt is correct. As you know, he attended Westminster School and was a prebendary here. The burial register just says "in the Abbey" so does not give an exact location. There is no monument for him nor is there a gravestone. St Peter's Church is Westminster Abbey. Our correct title is The Collegiate Church of St Peter, Westminster, but we are obviously still most commonly known as Westminster Abbey.

Yours sincerely,

The Westminster Abbey Library

Dear Sirs/Mesdames,

I am one of the many volunteer editors of Wikipedia, and recently have been working on an article on English author Richard Hakluyt. According to my researches, Hakluyt died on 23 November 1616 and was buried on 26 November that year in St Peter's Church in Westminster Abbey. I was wondering if you could tell me whether there is a monument to Hakluyt in the Church or the Abbey itself, and whether it would be possible to take a photograph of it to illustrate the Wikipedia article.

I look forward to hearing from you on the matter.

Regards,
Jack Lee

[edit] Recategorization: English travel writers?

I'm wondering whether to recategorize this article under Category:English travel writers, which is a sub-category of Category:English non-fiction writers, where it is currently categorized. Comments? Cheers, Jacklee 12:55, 13 June 2007 (UTC)

I've recategorized the article under Category:English travel writers for greater precision. Cheers, Jacklee 13:58, 10 October 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Picture of Christ Church Library

Presumably the picture of Christ Church Library has been included to illustrate Hakluyt setting out 'to read all the printed or written voyages and discoveries that he could find'. Unfortunately the Library as illustrated is an 18th-century building, not one Hakluyt would have known. Omassey 13:19, 9 October 2007 (UTC)

Ah, right. Yes, I was looking for a nice photograph to illustrate that section of the article. Perhaps a suitable photograph of Christ Church, Oxford, itself would be better? Can you suggest one, perhaps of a building that would have existed during Hakluyt's time? Cheers, Jacklee 13:56, 9 October 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Hakluyt's memorial tablet in Bristol Cathedral

I've just seen the request for a photo of Richard Hakluyt's memorial tablet on Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Bristol. I could probably do this - if I'm not in Bristol over the weekend then I definitely will be next week. Could you give any indication what it looks like or where in the (large) cathedral it is located as it is not listed on the monuments section of Bristol Cathedral or on Cathedral web site?— Rod talk 19:33, 2 May 2008 (UTC)

Hi, Rod. Thanks for offering to help with this. I'm afraid I have no idea what the memorial tablet looks like or where it is located. However, while doing research for the article I came across a reference to a book called A Reproduction of the Tablet Erected in Bristol Cathedral to the Memory of Richard Hakluyt Born 1522, Died 1616 (1911), which suggests that there is such a tablet. You'll have to ask a docent for help, or would you like me to e-mail the Cathedral and ask in advance? I actually sent them an e-mail earlier today asking if they had a photograph which they were willing to license to Wikipedia. — Cheers, JackLee talk 22:34, 2 May 2008 (UTC)
Hi, Rod. Bristol Cathedral helpfully e-mailed two images to me – one of the memorial tablet, and the other of a wonderful stained-glass image of Hakluyt. I've uploaded these to the Wikimedia Commons: see "Category:Richard Hakluyt". However, if you would like to take more photographs and add them to the category, please feel free to do so. And thanks again for volunteering! — Cheers, JackLee talk 23:09, 6 May 2008 (UTC)
OK their shots are better than I can do so I will leave it - but if you need other local ones let me know.— Rod talk 08:59, 7 May 2008 (UTC)
Thanks very much, Rod! — Cheers, JackLee talk 17:21, 7 May 2008 (UTC)
