There is also an off-season program if the student does not wish to participate in the current sport being played, which consists of running, agilities, weights, & preparation for the next sport. However, athletes are required to participate in at least 3 sports total for the year. 7th Graders arrive for practice (for football & basketball) @ 7 AM, while 8th Grade practices in the afternoon. (The 7th Grade off-season program does not begin until 8 AM.) Track & Field is usually an after-school practice for both grades. The Athletics Department is headed by Chad Keener.

[edit] Band

Richland Middle School has 3 bands: The Beginner Band, The Concert Band, & The Honor Winds Band.

[edit] Beginner Band

The RMS Beginner Band consists of 6th graders & 7th graders who have joined the band for the first time. The Beginner Band is taught by Gary Barnard & Matthew Cho. This band performs only a few concerts, but still travels just like the other 2 bands. (Just not as much)

[edit] Concert Band

This band consists primarily of 7th graders, & is directed by Russell Porter. This band performs more concerts & performs at UIL. (During the 2006-2007 school year, there were no French Horns in this band.) The Concert Band also accompanies the Honor Winds Band at the 8th Grade Fall Rally.

[edit] Honor Winds/Symphonic Band

The Honor Winds Band (also called Symphonic Band) consists of 8th Graders & 7th Graders with advanced playing abilities, & is directed mainly by Matthew Cho. This band performs the most concerts & also performs at UIL & regional competitions.
